At a very early age I wanted to work in management development. A 30+ year career at IBM offered a place to develop and grow my business and technical skills. Developing successful leaders and teams across the globe gave me a great sense of satisfaction. My expertise was in transforming and improving quality and my team was highly sought out.

Everything changed when I was diagnosed with a chronic illness.  I began searching outside of myself and my job to live a more fulfilling life.

I was physically compensating for my health condition. I became an expert in navigating the health care systems and working with doctors, nurses and administrators and volunteers. I seemed to be putting my life on hold while I tried to figure out how to live life. Leaving the corporate world opened up new possibilities.

When I decided to leave IBM, my manager asked if there was any job that would convince me to stay.  I thought about that for awhile. I had a great career and there was an opportunity for further advancement. In a large corporate environment the further you advance the more remote you become to the people who are (in my way of thinking) the most crucial asset for the company.  This question helped me get clear on the difference I wanted to continue to make.  I thanked him for the consideration but said "no, thank you."

That early drive to work in management development was truly a call to help people be at the their best.  Beyond that, to help people live at their best.  I discovered the only way I could live my best life is to know myself well. I stopped looking outside myself for the answers and now I begin every day at my best.
